Debt Talk
Patricia Buckland started to design and structure Debt Talk five years ago, when her son started school
and she realised that she could no longer continue working within the finance industry as a credit controller
and purchase ledger clerk. She sat at her desk and wondered what she should do for a business and felt that
there was a definite gap in the market for financial education as debt prevention, so has evolved her idea
into Debt Talk Ltd. Having encountered the stresses and strains of debt first hand, Patricia is now making a
stand against debt by educating young people in financial literacy so that they will not have to endure the
same emotions and fears she once experienced.
Debt Talk uses The Financial Services Authority and Basic Skills resources to ensure an
accurate and impartial money management course. Due to the flexibility of the delivery and timetable
the workshops are ideal for 16-19 year olds, young mums, schools, colleges, universities, councils and housing associations.
The objectives of the course are to educate and inform people to:
- Make decisions concerning banking services
- Know how to pay bills using different methods of payment i.e. standing orders, direct debits, cheques, debit cards and credit cards
- Be able to work out basic percentages and apply this to APR
- To be able to maximise income, recognise priority bills and understand the consequences of non payment of priority bills
- To be able to set and apply a household budget
- Practice setting household budgets for different life changes
- Discuss how to deal with letters from banks and the consequences of some actions
